Nagi is an adorable tale about a curious young girl with a very vivid imagination. The story takes place in yesteryear Tehran and each event in the story gives the reader a glimpse into the lovely customs and traditions of such a beautiful culture. Each and every character, especially Nagi, is positively charming and endearing. Her imagination makes the reader just as curious as she is about what is in that hole. My 10 year old really enjoyed the story. But it is a fun story for people of all ages. The illustrations are superb and brilliantly bring the story to life. There is often mystery and misunderstanding about cultures that are not our own. Nagi is a wonderful reminder that people, especially kids, are more alike than they are different. This book is a treasure and I hope for more adventures in a Nagi series.
The reader is invited into the mind of a young girl caught up in the excitement and mystery of what is for the adults a relatively mundane occasion- the digging of a hole for sanitation purposes. Naji has heard many warnings about "stranger danger" and these have fed her imagination so that people on the street who appear somehow unusual are assumed to be trolls. After careful observation, Naji learns that the stories had been told to protect her. Dispelling the myths brings her knowledge and new responsibility to protect herself using good judgement instead of fear- a good lesson for us all!
I love historical/cultural fiction and this book did not disappoint! It is a very easy read for adults, but kept my interest from beginning to end. I hope the author will have the sequel out soon!
This is an absolutely adorable story and the art work is just fabulous. Though it is a middle graders book, I as an adult found a great pleasure in reading it.
I am a teacher and have read many wonderful stories to my classes over the years. Naji teaches that we all have fears, no matter what culture you come from. It taught me many new and interesting things about the middle eastern culture. The lesson and connection ideas for teachers at the end is a fabulous resource and gave me many ideas on how to make the story of Naji come to life for my classes.
Great kids book, specially for those with Iranian heritage.
This book was way more informative of Iranian culture than I was expecting. I was looking for a positive traditional Middle Eastern story (my daughter is half persian), but was happily surprised to find a wealth of information on everyday terms and bits of culture from Iranians past and present. Naji is such a lovable character, my daughter talks about her all the time now. I would be very interested in a sequel!
