It’s been almost a year and a half since Lane left without warning for Paris, and in the interim Katharine has flourished in her role as caretaker of both Stranwyne and her Uncle Tully, proving herself more than capable. I’m not sure I can fully convey how much I love Katharine Tulman, but she is definitely among my absolute, all-time favorite heroines. The development of her character by Sharon Cameron is fantastic as Katharine begins as the ill-treated, somewhat embittered orphan who is only interested in securing her own financial future at the expense of others to the devoted, sacrificial young woman and loving niece she’s become. Katharine has always been analytical, quick-witted, sharp, pragmatic and determined, but those admirable traits have been put to better use now that she’s opened her heart to the people of Stranwyne. She’s matured greatly, become a leader, has been stretched to almost impossible lengths, and tested considerably… and will be again in A Spark Unseen. It’s simply fantastic. She’s simply fantastic.

Also wonderful is the development of Uncle Tully, Katharine’s sweet, brilliant autistic uncle. I love both Cameron’s portrayal of him in the book (and Katharine’s relationship with her uncle), and Hardingham’s portrayal of him in the audiobook. He steals the scene every time he’s on page.

The dynamic in this second book differs a lot from the first. Where The Dark Unwinding is a bit of a gothic mystery where I was trying to figure out who or what the “Bertha” was, A Spark Unseen has more of an international mystery/thriller feel to it. And it’s incredibly intense. Right from the beginning it’s incredibly intense, and the intensity never really dies down. It just keeps building with every turn of the page. It’s a definite nailbiter and page-turner, this book.

Odds ‘n ends:

- This is a book you’ll want on audiobook. Fiona Hardingham is an absolutely AMAZING narrator. I could listen to her all day… and sometimes, I did.

- There’s no third book listed, and A Spark Unseen has no cliffhanger/loose ends to speak of, but I’m still desperately hoping that we get another book. I’m not ready to say goodbye to Katharine quite yet.

Overall, full of intrigue, adventure, danger, and romance A Spark Unseen is a captivating, smart, and thrilling sequel to The Dark Unwinding.

Well developed characters, excellent prose, and intriguing problems to overcome. Cameron creates a believable late nineteenth-century world. Uncle Tully is a childlike mechanical genius, that you as a reader, want to play with and protect as much as the other characters wish to.
Thank goodness the story continues. I am waiting for the 3rd book. Wonderful story. Very interesting and well written. I loved the first book and hope to see much more by this author in the future.
Summer reading
I knew that I would love this book, because of my love for the first one. I had pre ordered this in June and have been waiting eagerly for it. And I must say I am not a t all disappointed. I know it might be a stretch but if she could find a way to write a third one I would buy a hundred copies just to give to everyone I am friends with. I am not lying when I say that after five fishing this boom I am a little depressed that it is over. I LOVE THIS BOOK!!
Great historical detail, wonderful twists and a fabulous view of loving family members who truly need that devotion. I will recommend this one to all my students who love an adventure.
Loved the well rounded characters, the touch of history, the twists and turns, and with just the right amount of romance! I read both books in a few days. I look forward to more from this author!
I could not put this book down! Once again, Sharon Cameron has created a story that engages, entertains, and immerses the reader in the lives of the characters she has created beginning with "The Dark Unwinding."

Just when Katharine, Uncle Tully and everyone at Stranwyne Keep seem to be recovering (somewhat) from the devastating events of the first book, new threats and misadventures beset them. After a break-in and failed kidnapping attempt, Katharine, along with the help and advice of her solicitor, Mr. Babcock, and lady's maid, Mary, decides to retreat to Paris to recover and escape from the clutches of Mr. Wickersham, who wants nothing more than to use Uncle Tully and his inventions. While there, Katharine's heart leads her to look for Lane, who has mysteriously disappeared.

"A Spark Unseen" is full of mystery, suspense, and romance as Katharine is thrown into the midst of the intrigue of Napoleon III's court. With each new twist, Katharine becomes less sure of whom she can trust. How can she protect Uncle Tully, keep his dangerous new invention out of the hands of both the British and the French governments, and find Lane all on her own?

Cameron creates a fabulous follow-up story that is just as exciting and endearing as her first. Her writing style is smooth and descriptive, interspersing dialogue with active narration realistically and effortlessly. New characters Mr. Marchand, Mrs. Newcastle, and Mrs. DuPont are welcome additions into Katharine's world, providing more mystery, and in some cases humor, as well as proving to Katharine and the reader that people are not always who they appear to be.

This story is everything that you want a good story to be-- heart-warming, exciting, adventurous, romantic, mysterious and thrilling. It is one you will not want to put down once you begin; you become thoroughly engrossed in Katharine's world, a fantastic blend of historical fiction and steam punk inventiveness. This is definitely an all-time favorite Young Adult novel. I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone!

By the way, I absolutely LOVE the covers for both novels! The jacket art (Borja) and design (Elizabeth B. Parisi) are stunning and captivating.
